Going solar in Michigan has never been easier. As of July 2025, you can get a 30% federal tax credit and big first-year savings through bonus depreciation. In Michigan, solar won’t raise your property taxes, and low-interest financing is available through Michigan Saves. You can also earn credits for the extra energy you send back to the grid. With rebates and grants sometimes available too, now’s a great time to make the switch to clean, affordable energy.
The Big Beautiful Bill (2025) shortened the 30% tax credit for commercial and residential solar from 2033 to 2026.
Businesses installing solar systems can use Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) with 80% bonus depreciation in the first year for eligible property placed in service between 2023–2026.
Solar energy systems are exempt from property tax increases under Michigan law.
For small-scale (residential and commercial) systems, this exemption is automatic via PA 255.
For utility-scale or large commercial projects, exemptions or PILTs (Payments in Lieu of Taxes) are available under Public Acts 108 & 109 (2023), subject to local approval.
Customers are credited for excess electricity at a “inflow/outflow” rate (usually lower than retail).
Major utilities like DTE and Consumers Energy have specific participation caps and compensation rates.
Utility Rebates: Offered periodically by utilities like DTE and Consumers Energy, but vary by program and availability.
State & Federal Grants: Available through programs like REAP (Rural Energy for America Program) and DOE-funded initiatives—especially for agricultural, low-income, and rural businesses.
